Other people are the strangest people

Whether being undiagnosed Autistic for 32 years, being gay, or being left-handed, there’s always been a sense of ‘other’ about me. Growing up, I never felt like I particularly belonged anywhere. Every so often I would find what felt like ‘my people’, but there was often still a feeling of something being missing.

This sense of not belonging has led to all kinds of problems in its own way, however, this isn’t a serious piece about that; this is all about the little things that people have always found weird about me, that I really don’t understand.

I always carry tissues

The first time someone tried to make me feel uncomfortable about having tissues on my person was when I was about twelve years old. A girl at school saw one in my pocket while we were in the corridor and immediately pointed, laughed, and said ‘Nice tissues!’ They were in fact, very average, clean tissues. Not especially nice at all, much like her really. Another time, I had forgotten to bring tissues with me to school and asked two girls that I sat with in one of my classes if they had any. They were completely puzzled by this request, because they ‘didn’t have a cold’, and why else would they bring them?! They directed me to a girl they believed…
