Please forgive the inarguably clickbait title, I couldn’t resist. Then again, is it really clickbait if it’s true? Sure, we could get into a debate about how attractiveness is subjective, everyone is beautiful in some way, and I do believe that. However, societal norms and expectations are not disputable. There are types of women who are conventionally attractive, who most people will agree are good-looking, and I can assure you, I don’t fall into those categories. Even though the type of woman that society considers ‘attractive’ changes over time — the tiny-waisted, large-busted women of the 19th century, the larger women who are admired following times of austerity, the slender women of the 1960s-’80s — I have never fit any of these templates. The feminine beauty ideal is even different from culture to culture, but in case we’re looking at Western standards. This is also not a self-pity party, nor an article about body positivity, though that is a wonderful thing. This is about the genuine perks of being an unattractive female.
